Position Description

As a member of the Seagate Power Device team, the selected candidate will apply their skills to the development of next generation HDD motor driver solutions. The ideal candidate possesses a strong servo firmware background along with a basis in mixed signal hardware. General job functions include the following:
  • Gather Power Device functional requirements from Seagate user community
  • Design/model/analyze new subsystem architectures to achieve required functionality while maintaining cost discipline
  • In select cases, prototype and bench test solutions proposed for Power Device integration
  • Write and maintain detailed subsystem specifications necessary to clearly communicate required functionality to Power Device vendors
  • Direct vendor efforts from conception, through design and delivery of initial samples
  • Verify device operation and functionality at the component and drive level
  • Manage device revisions, ensuring problem resolution that satisfies time-to-market constraints
  • Function as in-house device expert through end of life
In addition to the above general tasks, servo firmware specific job functions include the following:
  • Develop specialized C-based servo firmware to assist in evaluation and failure analysis of new device functionality
  • Work closely with Power Device vendors to ensure new devices support and are compatible with Seagate firmware implementations
  • Serve as point contact for firmware and tool related questions/issues originating within the Power Device organization
  • Working alongside Seagate servo firmware personnel, develop spindle motor and VCM control algorithms and drive level firmware
The selected individual will work on significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. Independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results is required, as is independent determination of methods and procedures on new or special assignments. May supervise the activities of others.

Qualifications
Exhibited skills and experience in the following areas are mandatory:
  • Solid understanding of current state of the art HDD servo firmware algorithms used for spindle control, head load/unload, seek, and retract
  • Significant experience in standard firmware development practices including source code control, compilation and linking, real-time tracing, and use of emulators
  • Control system design and analysis, both continuous and discrete time
Additional desirable skills include:
  • General analog/digital circuit design and analysis
  • Strong grasp of power electronics, including voltage regulation, VCM control, and three-phase motor driving schemes
Finally, Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and 5 - 10 years progressive design experience and responsibility level is required.
